The word word apophasis is “the raising of an issue by claiming not to mention it”

First usage

Our word came into English in the mid-1600s

Background / Comments

An example of apophasis is saying something like “I will not bring up the accusation that my opponent is being paid off by big corporations because there is no proof” — it is a sly debating technique. As I noted, I knew of this trick, but not the word for it. Our word came from the late Late Latin word apophasis (repudiation), which came from the Greek word apophanai (to deny), which is made from apo- (away from; off) and phanai (to say).
