apophasis

Pronounced: uh-PAH-fuh-suhs, noun

Notes: I knew this thing, but not this word for it

Yesterday’s word

The word spuddle means, as a verb, “to work feebly”. As a noun, it means “a feeble action or movement”.

First usage

Our word came into English in the mid-1600s

Background / Comments

It turns out that our word IS a combination of “spud” and “puddle”, but “spud” refers to a dagger or a digging instrument, not a potato. It is not clear how these two words together came to have the meaning it does.
