First usage

Background / Comments

Our word is abbreviated viz (more later). Our word came from the Latin word videlicet, which is made up of videre (to see) and licet (it is permitted). So, how did we get a “z” in the abbreviation? In manuscripts, there was a symbol used for the contraction of Latin words ending with “et” and that symbol looked like a “z”, so when the contraction came into English, the letter “z” was used.
