Yesterday’s word

The word pilcrow is the symbol for paragraph breaks (¶)

First usage

Our word came into English in the mid-1400s

Background / Comments

I became used to seeing pilcrows when computers started being used for word processing, so I was a little surprised that the word started being used so early. It is thought that our word came from an alteration of the word paragraph as well as a transformation of “pill” and “crow”.
